When it comes to San Marcos Springs located in San Marcos, TX, the abundance of nature is astounding. Beautiful trails and lakes surround the area, but the latest nature project coming to San Marcos Springs is “The Great Springs Project.” This massive new network of trails will enrich the area with new hiking, camping, and backpacking opportunities.
What is “The Great Springs Project?”
The Texas Great Springs Project is a project that aims to bring together four springs in Central Texas: San Marcos Springs, Barton Springs, San Antonio Springs, and Comal Springs. These four springs span across Texas and the trail will link all four springs together as well as connect San Antonio, Austin and a few of the cities in between. San Marcos Springs, located in San Marcos, is on the map and will also be connected. The project will seek to protect and preserve wildlife, water, and land areas while providing a way for Texans to enjoy nature and an active lifestyle.
The project released designs in early 2022 calling it the “One Great Texas Trail.” The trail will begin in Austin, TX at Barton Springs. Then the trail will move through Buda, Kyle and reach San Marcos and San Marcos Springs. This will connect to New Braunfels where Comal Springs lies. Next up will be Cibolo, Schertz, Garden Ridge, Selma, Universal City and finally San Antonio where San Antonio Springs is located. While many people have talked about using the trail for hikes, bike rides, and long walks, people can also swim and visit these local springs.
Who Will Be Able to Use The Trails and Springs?
“The Great Springs Project” will be open to the public. Any person can hike along the trails and visit the springs. This 100-mile hiking trail connects San Antonio and Austin while going through San Marcos. This is perfect for TRACE homeowners who will be able to easily hop on a nearby trailhead and get a hike in or stop at any of the four springs for a dip. The full trail is 100 miles long! Conserving the springs and utilizing the area while encouraging eco-friendly travel and a healthy lifestyle was the initial reason behind developing the full trail.
How has Texas Legislature Helped with this Project?
Throughout 2020, the project moved through several Texas cities and was able to get support to begin connecting the network of trails. Both philanthropic donations and federal money are being used by Texas leaders to complete the project. The Texas legislature has also passed several bills that will not only provide ongoing funding for the project after its completion but also help with creating new parks in the area. The legislature also passed laws that will protect the lands and contribute to the natural protected lands in Texas.
