Our Marvelous San Marcos series continues this week with the best pie… pizza pie, that is! Who doesn’t love a delicious slice of pizza? The options for what goes on top of the crust are endless, and the sauce doesn’t always have to be tomato. We’ve seen white sauce, BBQ sauce, refried beans, and no sauce! You name it, it’s probably been done.
Check out TRACE’s list of where you can get the best pizza in San Marcos to satisfy your cravings for flat pie!
Pie Society
700 N. LBJ, San Marcos, Texas 78666
Self-admitted pizza snobs from New Jersey have tried pizza in 13 states and none passed their strict integrity test. But Pie Society passed with flying colors! The fun menu features many vegetarian-friendly options. Plain old Margherita pizza will not do. If you want cheese and tomato pizza, ask for the Illuminati.
Travel to biblical times with the Garden of Eden as its slices runneth over with veggies, or face El Diablo with spicy sriracha. People who follow soy- or gluten-free diets can order vegan cheese for no extra charge.
Gumby’s Pizza and Wings
403 N. Guadalupe St., San Marcos, TX 78666
Yes, this beloved pizza place is named after the animated clay character who had a horse sidekick named Pokey. Check out the Randy Marsh pie with macaroni pasta with crème fraiche as the base sauce topped with cheddar, parmesan, mozzarella, bacon, and red pepper flakes.
You can make your own pizza with sauce options like pokey butter, Buffalo, and hot sauce. If you go on Thursday, you can order yourself a massive cheese pizza. Their monster-sized Buffalo wings make a perfect companion to the gigantic pizza.
Figaro’s Pizza and Pub
243 Wonder World Dr. Ste #100, San Marcos, TX 78666
One bite of Figaro’s pizza and you can’t help but sing the famous line from a Barber of Seville song, “Ah, bravo Figaro, bravo, Bravissimo, bravo!” For times you want something different, they also serve burgers and pasta. Beer is on hand, as well as wine and plenty of cocktail options like the San Martian.
Pizza includes everything from the Meatza and the Don Ho—which includes pineapples to represent the owner’s Hawaiian background—to the No Kiss Tonight chicken and the Foo Foo veggie pizzas. Gluten-free crust is available.
Valentino’s
110 N. LBJ Dr., San Marcos, TX 78666
Valentino’s describes themselves as a casual pizza parlor with Pac-Man and sports TV. One customer says it’s the place to go to discover the latest trends in music, pizza, and culture.
They bring indie, folk, and punk musicians from all over the U.S. to entertain diners. One person searched all over Austin for good pie only to find it in downtown San Marcos at Valentino’s.
Brooklyn Pie Co.
126 S. Guadalupe St. San Marcos, TX 78666
Crave large, thin New York style pizza? Head to Brooklyn Pie Co. right in downtown San Marcos. The pizza recipe has been around since the 1940s when an Italian immigrant came to Brooklyn and baked a cheese and pepperoni pie using a recipe from an Italian woman.
You can order all the traditional pies or you can try a work of art in the Mona Lisa or a bit of Texas in the Ranger pizza with BBQ sauce and chicken.
