If you’re a regular runner, you already know the benefits that come with sticking to a training schedule. You get better sleep, better overall health, improved immune response, slower resting heart rate, more self-confidence, higher bone density, and much more when you stick to a disciplined running routine, according to WebMD.
But if you’re not a regular runner or walker, it’s never too late to start. According to the Mayo Clinic, you could be ready for a 5k in as little as two months. It just so happens that San Marcos has several 5ks coming up this season for those who are willing to put in the work to get ready. Or simply show up the day of and take it easy with a walk!
A 5k run or walk (3.1 miles) might sound daunting if you’re just getting started, but it’s not as impossible as it sounds. If you follow the Mayo Clinic’s guidelines, you can train gradually, and avoid going too hard at the start. You can be race-ready in less time than you think. Once you feel up to it, you can join in on the upcoming 5k races in and around San Marcos.
Remember, San Marcos’ and nearby 5ks aren’t necessarily about winning. You can take pride in a victory, sure, but the contests are more about supporting local charities, having fun while getting a great workout in, and finishing stronger than your last race. These are community events that help support our collective good health as well as a charitable contribution to a local non-profit in San Marcos.
Here are some upcoming races…
