Unless you caught it last year, bet you’ve never seen a Mermaid parade. Here’s your chance to attend this uniquely San Marcos event that takes place on Saturday, September 16 from 10 am to noon. It’s free for everyone.
Why a mermaid-themed parade? What does that have to do with San Marcos? The mermaid is a symbol of guardianship for the San Marcos River. The parade immortalizes the mermaids as the river’s guardians and celebrates the city’s radiant river and artistic community.
What Is the Downtown Mermaid Parade in San Marcos?
Last year’s parade had almost 100 entries including floats, marchers, dancers, musicians, and mermaid puppets. This year is sure to be bigger and better with an electrifying mix of dance, movement, color, and joy! The parade starts at the corner of CM Allen and Cheatham Street with plenty of viewing spots along the way.
Leading the parade are the Austin Samba School and Las Monas Performance Group. Austin Samba School is a group of more than 40 drummers and 70 dancers who specialize in Brazilian music and dance. Las Monas brings their famous giant, interactive dolls and puppets that celebrate the rich Mexican-American heritage.
After the parade ends, the fun continues until 7 pm at the Aqua Faire in San Marcos Main Park Plaza. The fair will feature live music, art, food, and boatloads of fun.
Where Do We Park?
If possible, share a ride, walk or ride a bike. You can park at San Marcos City Park on 170 Charles Austin Dr. or Ramon Lucio Baseball Park on 601 S. CM Allen Pkwy.
What Should We Bring?
You might want to bring a lawn chair, picnic blanket, and camera or phone camera. And wear your mermaid outfit. Not kidding. Remember to bring your smiles because you’re going to have hours of enjoyment!
What Else Do I Need to Know?
There’s a Mermaid Pet Costume Contest! Dress your pet like a mermaid and enter the Mer-Pet Fashion Show. Your pet just might win a prize! The contest has two main categories: dogs/puppies and cats/kittens/small animals. The entry fee is two items from the animal shelter’s donation needs list. It’s a win-win! You get to have fun and, at the same time, help the animal shelter.
Come on out to get your mermaid on and see the Mermaid SPLASH Royal Court. Light rain or shine, the show will go on!
