It’s almost time for one of most fun times of the year in San Marcos, Texas. And that’s The Mermaid Society SMTX. It’s not a one-day celebration. Things will be hopping in August and September as the residents celebrate the creative spirit of SMTX!
Why a mermaid? The mermaids are the guardians of the San Marcos River. The big parade celebrates the city’s radiant river and artistic community as well as honors the mermaids as the river’s guardians.
Shop at the Mermaid Bazaar
The fun starts with the Mermaid Bazaar on August 7 from 10 am to 5 pm. Occurring every two weeks in August and September, you can shop at the open-air art market at Wonder World Cave and Adventure Park (1000 Prospect St., San Marcos, TX 78666).
Shop, nosh, and ride on the park’s cave tour and train rides. The bazaar will have all kinds of vendors including arts, vintage, health, farmers, retail, and more.
Build a Little Free Library
Have you always wanted to create a Little Free Library? Little Free Library Makers Day on August 14 from 10 am to 5 pm is your chance to learn how. The Mermaid Society will provide supplies including scrap wood, paint, and paintbrushes.
The workshop is at Art Park (1000 Prospect St., San Marcos, TX 78666). Your completed Little Free Library may be featured at the Downtown Street Fair on September 25 after the Downtown Mermaid Promenade. They hope to inspire artists to create funky, art, and colorful libraries.
LOCA FRIYAY’s at the Art Park
The Mermaid Society SMTX invites everyone to join them for a backyard blast! Bring your board games, family, and friends for this community get-together scheduled for Aug. 20 and Sep. 17 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. They’ll have checker and chess boards painted on tables as well as a selection of games.
The Art Park has an outdoor play area for the kids including cornhole, swings, see-saws, and a basketball hoop. The little ones can run off their big ball of energy in the wide-open space. The park has picnic tables and A food truck will be on site. You’re welcome to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets.
Save the Dates for Inaugural Events
Save the date on Saturday, September 11 from 9:30 pm to 10:30 pm. This is the inaugural AquaMade Runway. The event will spotlight up to 20 creatives and their eco-fashion works of art as part of the runway action. Root Cellar Catering Co. will serve a fabulous menu. We can’t help but wonder will there be MER-mosas?
Everyone is encouraged to reuse, recycle, and reinvent when choosing their attire for the event. They also challenge guests to wear creative headwear: funky, artsy, colorful, embellished, and classic. Think Kentucky Derby hats with a heaping helping of creativity.
Another date you want to mark in your calendar is Sunday, September 12 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. This is the Inaugural Siren Run and Splash. More information coming soon.
The Mermaid Society SMTX is also introducing the Aquamaid Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, September 18 from 10 am to 5 pm. Watch the Mermaid Society SMTX Facebook page and website for updates. Also, on this date from 6 on to 10 pm is the Mertini Shakedown,
Downtown Mermaid Promenade
And the famous Downtown Mermaid Promenade Parade is scheduled for Saturday, September 25 from 10 am to noon. This is the ultimate don’t miss event! The parade is expected to have more than 100 entries.
The parade starts at the corner of CM Allen and Cheatham Street and ending at the San Marcos Main Park Plaza where the fun continues until 7 pm at the Downtown Street Fair. This is your chance to enjoy a free community festival of art, live music, fun, and food to keep your energy up for hours!
